Species Information

Diagnosis

Shell minute, brown, flat-spired, and bearing widely and rather evenly spaced lamellar ribs. The shell is smaller, with a flatter spire and broader umbilicus than for Paralaoma servilis which it resembles. Shell minute, disc-shaped; brown, with widely spaced lamellar ribs and finer growth and spiral lines; umbilicus ca. 1/3 of the shell width; apertural lip thin.

Habitat


Planogyra clappi lives in rich, moist, predominantly deciduous forests. It is usually found by searching in leaf litter (Forsyth 2004). It has been found from near sea level to elevations up to 560 m in BC.

Distribution


Global range

Haida Gwaii, BC (Forsyth 2004), to Trinity and Mendocino counties, California (Roth 1985, Roth and Sadeghian 2006); northern Idaho (Frest and Johannes 2001).

BC range

Haida Gwaii and northern Vancouver Island, south along the BC coast. The species also likely occurs on the mainland North Coast of BC, an area that is under-surveyed for terrestrial molluscs, especially micro-snails. Planogyra clappi should also be expected from the wet southern Interior mountains.

Taxonomy


Early records of Patula asteriscus or Pyramidula asteriscus from BC and Washington state (e.g., Dall 1905) refer to this species instead. Planogyra asteriscus is the eastern North American species.

Notes


Etymology

Genus name is from the Latin, "planus" (flat) and Greek "gyros" (whorl or turn); the gender is masculine. The species is named after George W. Clapp (1859-1949), an American naturalist.
